MP3 Audio of Bhajan
apane surya svayam ban jao
sung by Vishal Chandra

As school-goers, we studied history and were advised by the teachers to follow the example of Gandhiji, Nehruji, Sardar Patel, Subhash Babu, and Rajendra Babu.
Later on, we learnt of the mission of Sri Aurobindo, Gurdev Rabindra Nath Tagore, Mahamana Malviyaji, Vinobaji, Shri Jai Prakash Narain. There was an inclination to emulate them.
As sadhakas, we learnt about the noble deeds of saints and sages, the natural tendency was to imbibe their virtues and follow them.
Even as professionals, we admire the eminent ones, who made a mark in their field.
In short, we identify role models
in spiritual, professional, social and political fields and the childhood candid advice to follow the role models becomes an integral part of our nature.
In contrast, this bhajan, which in deed is based on a shloka from the Vedas, gives an impacting message to become "Our owm role model".
It is in tune with Swami Vivekanda's message. "Uttisht Jagrat..." It awakens us, reminding us of the faculties and powers the LORD has bestowed on us.
It reafirms Swami Ramdas's philosophy, "Find your own path."
Its strong message is to be a Leader and not a follower.
It forbids us from following fading foot prints of others.
What it really means is, in the words of HW Longfellow, as stated in the Psalm of Life, "Be a hero in the strife."
Be a passionate challenger, who is not deterred by hurdles and obsticles. Dream BIG and proceed on the journey of life with determination, scaling greater heights through sharpening of skills, reinforced by own experience coupled with innovation.
The last stanza stirs up the inner self, spelling out the mission and also the "enabler"... the most important aspect of life, the SPARK.
On a very personal note, we had heard this "bhajan" from dear Bablu, at the time of dear Madhav's marriage. Pujya Babuji,
developed a great affinity for it.
He got it printed on the cover of souvenir of Vyaktitva Vikas Seminar and would play the audio tape in over a dozen Teachers training camp for value education,
which he conducted between 1995 and 2003.
Let me state with all humility that
I sang two of the stanzas, in my speech, upon being confered Outstanding Leader Award by the Aditya Birla Group in 2002.
My family's fascination for the "bhajan" is evident from the fact that my wife Amita designed a big piece of art depicting Surya and his seven horses with cotton, aluminium and colourful painting along with the prominent message :-
"Apne Surya Swayam Bun Yao".
The art piece adorns my drawing room in GK IV, in New Delhi as it did in Renukoot until last year.
